The Independent Petroleum Association of America, the American Petroleum Institute, and the International Association of Geophysical Contractors submitted a letter in response to the National Marine Fisheries Service’s request for information and public comment on the Natural Resources Defense Council petition to list Bryde’s whales in the Gulf of Mexico as a Distinct Population Segment (DPS) under the Endangered Species Act. As explained in the comments, neither the scientific evidence nor the Service’s regulations and policies regarding DPSs currently support designating Bryde’s whales in the GoM as a DPS.
